A popular Instagram gardener, Tom Strowlger, aka @garden_with_tom, started posting videos during lockdown and has never looked back. This inspirational garden writer captures the wonder of each plant and flower in his garden, unveiling the magic of nature with friendly ease. Find out what Tom has planned for the year ahead…

What inspires you in the garden?

My main inspiration is being outdoors and amongst mother nature. The seasons of the year are truly amazing and, by being in the garden, I can fully embrace what each has to offer. I love the spring days full of hope and optimism, the hot days of summer, the withdrawing days of autumn and the crisp cold days of winter – there’s always something to do.

I have a soft spot for a colourful border and, if you follow me on Insta, you’ll know that I also like to maintain a lush lawn with a sharply defined edge. I love to be creative and enjoy designing new garden beds filled with flowers and shrubs. More than anything, I like a new project!

What are you most proud of?

I love to see my family enjoying the plants and flowers in our garden. But I’m also really proud of being able to share my experience in the garden with so many people. It’s fantastic to see others taking inspiration from my content and enjoying their own green space.

What are your future plans?

This year my plan is to create new beds and borders filled with a cornucopia of colour that extends through all four seasons. But longer term, my aim is simply to continue to create an environment of joy, interest and peace.

Top gardening tip

For new gardeners, I recommend being brave, starting with something small and growing your confidence from there. Go with the flow and always know there will be both successes and failures – that’s very normal. It’s about learning as you go and simply enjoying your garden.
