On Monday, our New Product Development Manager, Michael Perry helped to sow Thompson & Morgan’s €200.00 giant pumpkin seed.
This seed comes from a new world record pumpkin, which was weighed in last autumn (2012) at 2009lbs. The pumpkin was a hybrid raised by Ron Wallace of Greene, Rhode Island and was weighed in at the Topsfield Fair in the USA.
For more information on the seed and how Thompson & Morgan acquired it, see our earlier world record breaking pumpkin seed post.
With the help of a range of experts, Thompson & Morgan hope to challenge the UK record, which stands at 1504lbs.
You can keep up to date with progress on how the T&M giant pumpkin seed is developing on Twitter following @TMGiantPumpkin and joining in the conversation using #giantpumpkin.
Don’t forget our Competition
Do you think you can grow a record-breaking pumpkin? You’ll be in with a chance of winning £10,000 if you break the world record! To enter into the competition, you will need to present your giant pumpkin at the Autumn Pumpkin Festival in Southampton on Saturday 12th October 2013. See the Pumpkin competition terms and conditions.

Good luck, We will be interested to watch your progress. We will also be tying to grow a few small ones from T&M seeds in the back of he compost heap this year
Thank you! And good luck to you with yours – the compost heap is a great place to grow pumpkins.
That looks a fun thing to do with the children. Must do some planting with the kids.
I am surprised that anyone would spend €200.00 on pumpkin seed even if it does come from a world record pumpkin. Why not just put your time and effort into growing a record pumpkin from your own seed stock and then you can make a small fortune by selling them for €180.00 each. Undercut the rival and nab their rich customers.
I will happily settle for the prize of free wildflower plants and packets of wildflower seed that Thompson and Morgan are offering. With these wildflowers I will attract all the insects and giant bees to pollinate the flowers and of course your pumpkins.
I wish T&M good luck (though I’m sure skill and knowhow will come into it) with this challenge. Unfortunately I don’t have room in my small plot for giant pumpkins, but I will be trying to grow winter squashes ‘Sweet Dumpling’ and ‘Uchiki Kuri’. These will not take up quite so much space and hopefully I’ll end up with some manageable sized fruits!
Thanks Amanda! And best of luck to you with your squashes, I hope you get a good crop.
So looking forward to watching the pumpkin grow and grow and grow !! I shall be panting my seeds just as soon as I receive them ! I won a packet of giant pumpkin seeds from @gardening _greek this morning !!
Thanks Christine, we’ll keep you posted here on the blog! Congratulations on winning the seeds, I hope you have a successful pumpkin year!
